You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love

Released on June 12, 2026, You Seem Pretty Sad for a Girl So in Love marks the third studio album from Olivia Rodrigo. The project splits its narrative into two distinct halves: the A-side titled "Girl So in Love" captures the euphoria of new romance, while the B-side "You Seem Pretty Sad" chronicles the relationship's subsequent unraveling. Recorded at Amusement Studios in Los Angeles and produced entirely by Dan Nigro, this collection represents a deliberate stylistic departure from her previous pop-punk roots.

The sonic landscape shifts toward 1980s new wave, dream pop, synth-pop, and college rock. Critics noted comparisons to Gary Numan and R.E.M., though Rodrigo successfully integrated these textures with her distinct vocal delivery rather than sounding derivative. In an interview with British Vogue, she described the songs as "sad love stories," explaining that she sought tracks possessing a "tinge of fear or yearning." The visual identity also changed, moving away from the signature purple palette to a baby pink theme seen across the cover art and marketing materials.

Commercially, the album achieved immediate dominance by debuting at number one on the US Billboard 200. It generated 485,000 album-equivalent units in its first week, including 273,000 in pure sales. A record-breaking 164,000 vinyl LP copies were sold during that period, setting a new benchmark for the largest single-week vinyl sales by a female artist. Additionally, it secured the largest streaming opening by a female act in 2026 with 218.41 million on-demand audio streams. The lead single "Drop Dead" reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100, making Rodrigo the first artist in history to achieve number-one debuts for both a lead single and an album simultaneously across three consecutive releases.
