One Dance

On April 5, 2016, the world got a glimpse of what global pop sounded like when stripped to its rhythmic core. Drake dropped "One Dance" as the second single from his fourth studio album Views, inviting Nigerian artist Wizkid and British vocalist Kyla into the fold. The track leaned heavily on a sample from Kyla's 2008 UK funky hit "Do You Mind," weaving it into a production team effort led by Nineteen85, 40, and DJ Maphorisa.

The song didn't just chart; it dominated. It became Drake's first number-one hit on the Billboard Hot 100 as a lead performer and held the top spot on the UK Singles Chart for 15 straight weeks. By October 30, 2023, the Recording Industry Association of America certified it Diamond status, marking over 10 million units sold or streamed in the United States alone.

Critics noted how the track's melody-driven structure pushed dancehall and Afro-influenced sounds into the mainstream consciousness without losing their edge. Its success signaled a major shift in pop music, paving the way for broader acceptance of international genres. In September 2026, the song's staying power remained evident when Drake surprised Karol G during her Houston concert to perform the hit live, proving the track still commanded attention years after its release.
