Sobre este álbum
Released on July 15, 2022, Gemini Rights stands as the second studio album and major-label debut by American musician Steve Lacy. Issued through RCA Records under license from his own label, L-M Records, the project arrives three years after his independent effort Apollo XXI. The record spans twelve tracks and runs for 42 minutes and 58 seconds, weaving a sonic tapestry that blends indie rock, alternative R&B, funk, jazz, and psychedelia.
Lacy produced the majority of the material himself, showcasing his evolution as a guitarist and songwriter while exploring themes of love, heartbreak, and self-discovery. He described the work as an examination of feelings as the only tangible reality. Guest appearances include Fousheé on "Sunshine" and Matt Martians on the closing track "Riding Further." The sessions took place primarily in Los Angeles, maintaining a DIY aesthetic while incorporating a polished production quality suited for a major release.
The album generated significant momentum with singles "Mercury," "Bad Habit," and "Sunshine." "Bad Habit" became a commercial breakthrough, eventually reaching number one on the Billboard Hot 100. Upon release, Gemini Rights debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 and claimed the top spot on the Top Rock Albums chart. Critics praised the cohesive yet eclectic mix of genres, with Pitchfork and Rolling Stone offering high ratings for its confident songwriting and guitar work.
