Lula on regulating digital platforms

por Not A Newt: Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva

the part that sticks is the tax line. brazil shouldn't be hosting "monstrously large companies earning billions, paying no taxes in this country and trying to steer its election result," lula said, and the read on that is he wants them taxed hard. before any of that, his campaign had already gone after Meta: the accusation was that pro-Lula posts got their reach cut and his ad account came down during the election. Meta said "categorically" no to both. so lula's answer is regulation. he described having to get past "interference coming from outside, through digital platforms," then put it plainly: "we're going to have to regulate them." what those rules would actually be hasn't been spelled out, and which outlets or platforms they'd cover isn't either. the shape of it, though, reads like some control mechanism over media in brazil.
