New York J train stabbing investigation
Passenger in New York subway fatally stabbed during rush hour NEW YORK. September 30, 2026, around 17:20, 59-year-old Queens resident Mesias Lozano suffered fatal knife wounds in a J train car near the Woodhaven Boulevard station. He was transported to Jamaica Hospital, where doctors pronounced him dead. Police identified the suspect as 25-year-old Bronx resident Jirell Thomas. After the attack, he left the station, but passengers and witnesses pursued him. Later, police found Thomas on the roof of a nearby garage and arrested him. A knife was found on his person. Thomas has been charged with murder and illegal possession of a weapon. According to police, the attack was unprovoked. Lozano and Thomas were not acquainted and had no interaction prior to the incident. Initial reports suggested a conflict between the men, but police later clarified that there was no prior altercation.
