Teacher vs Philosopher societal value

    por Gigliola: Education

New student loan regulations might hit teaching aides, social workers, and artists harder than anyone else. But asking if we should judge those professions just by their paycheck feels like missing the whole point. Teachers shape every single child in their classroom, yet a single accomplished philosopher could potentially reach millions of people. Public school systems need a massive number of teachers to meet demand, while the need for philosophy degrees is totally subjective. A teacher has a fixed limit on how many students they can reach, whereas a philosopher achieves impact at a much larger scale with fewer individuals. If you measure success by impact per person, the argument suggests maximizing the number of people in philosophy instead.

I think the point is, what does this contribute to society as a whole? Sure. I think you put a lot of data to make these kinds of statements. Because think about it. Like, okay, teachers, like they don't get paid enough. They're underpaid. I would agree. So if we're only talking about their financial outcome, then we're missing the point of why it is that they're doing these things. I don't think that's a fair comparison, though. I think that's the exact comparison that we're making, to be honest. I don't think that's fair at all. because what, like how many, like, you know, based on the requirements that we have for how many people have to go through the public school system, you know how many people you need for those jobs. Everything else is pure subjectivity. Like, and of course you can say there's subjection in terms of how many kids we need, but like people have decided upon that. Whereas how many people need a philosophy degree? Can you equate the numbers the same way? Because like one great philosopher could probably do the work of a lot more than a teacher can. A teacher has a fixed amount of people that they have to speak to or teach, whereas a philosopher could have impact at grandiose scales in far less people. I think the argument is, if that's the case, then we want to get as many people in there as we can.
