Mamdani second home tax ruling
por Flint: Zohran Mamdani
The judge just threw out the rollout of the second home tax in NYC because the city got it so wrong. They listed 900,000 New Yorkers as non-residents when most actually live there. The mayor initially made people prove they were residents, but the court flipped that burden and said the city has to prove they aren't. This rollout was a disaster for homeowners even if no crime happened. Ken Griffin bought a penthouse for $238 million and the tax targets properties worth $5 million or more where owners don't live full time. Mayor Mamdani is appealing the decision but the tax itself stays valid once they fix the process. Calling this draconian feels like an understatement when you see how they weaponized the list. The Ugandan Mayor promised to tax the rich but ended up harassing regular residents instead. It's another example of socialists mishandling governance from the get go.

I ran for mayor. I said I was going to tax the rich. Well, today, we're taxing the rich. This is an annual fee on luxury properties worth $5 million whose owners do not live full-time in the city. Like for this penthouse, which hedge fund CEO Ken Griffin bought for $238 million. So, naming and shaming there. And then what he did is he did this rollout and said, okay, we're going to identify these properties. Well, it was so terribly done. Caught up a whole bunch of people into it. And now a judge is saying, you are going to have to redo this. And in the report, he said, no crime is involved here, but homeowners are being substantially harmed and penalized needlessly by the method of implementing the tax law. So they arbitrarily, they arbitrarily put up a list and names and addresses of 900,000 New Yorkers. They said, we're not residents here. And a majority of those people like, no, we live here. And the city said, well, you have to go ahead and prove it. And the judge is saying, no, the city has to prove that these people are not residents.
