The Old Pickup Truck When Jake was 16, there was one thing about his father that embarrassed him. Every afternoon, his dad picked him up from school in the same old pickup truck. The paint was faded, the seats were cracked, and the engine was loud enough that Jake's friends could hear it before it reached the parking lot. Dad, why don't you buy a new truck? Jake once asked. His father smiled and said, This one still gets me where I need to go. Jake never understood. Years passed. Jake went to college, found a job, and eventually started a family of his own. Then his father passed away. One afternoon, Jake returned home to clean out the old truck before selling it. Inside the glove compartment, beneath some yellowed papers, he found a stack of receipts. College tuition. Books. Rent. Payment after payment his father had quietly made for him. Jake sat behind the wheel and looked at the cracked dashboard. For years, he had thought his father drove that old truck because he couldn't afford a new one. Now he understood. His father could have bought a better truck. He simply chose to build a better future for his son instead.
