If you slip a ring onto a chain and let it go, it will slide down and fall off. Hold the chain between your thumb and forefinger, with the rest of your fingers curled into a fist, keeping the chain hanging. Then thread it through the ring turned sideways. Drop it, pull your thumb away to give it a slight spin. As it falls, one edge hits the chain first. That point becomes a pivot, flipping the ring around the chain. The chain slips into a loop and tightens as the ring drops, snagging it mid-fall. In real time, it looks like magic.
