Dr. Idris Evans killed in Edgewood

A pediatric intensive care physician at UPMC Children's Hospital in Pittsburgh is dead, and the man accused in the attack is 32-year-old Elijah Hemingway, who police say got into the Evans residence in Edgewood shortly after midnight on Thursday and assaulted Dr. Idris Evans and his wife while they slept. Dr. Evans was 46. He directed a team that transported critically ill children and infants. His wife told police she struggled to defend herself against the attacker, and she remains in critical condition at a hospital. Their two children, aged 8 and 12, survived. Hemingway was located hiding behind a neighboring house, with cuts on his hand. He faces charges including murder, aggravated assault, burglary, and criminal trespass. Court documents say he had previously forced his way into a former partner's home in February to steal electronics, and in July he was arrested for burglary and theft, then released on a no-bail bond without payment.
