Would you want your kids to be paid to attend class? That's essentially what the Detroit Public School District is doing by expanding its Perfect Attendance Pays Program. The program pays high schoolers $100 a week for perfect attendance during designated periods. Starting this fall, middle schoolers will receive 50 bucks for perfect attendance. Nearly $14 million of the district's budget is for reducing chronic absenteeism. Supporters say that it's working and data shows that last school year chronic absenteeism among high school students dropped 10% to 54%. Wow, it has gotten to this point that they are giving kids money to go to school to have perfect attendance. Now, this is what I have a problem with. That's a lot of money they could use in other areas of the school, but then now that I'm thinking about it, it's a lot of kids that don't have the funding for clothes, shoes, lunch money that this money can help them with. This money can definitely help with some of those things that certain parents don't have the money for. Now, I do have a problem with these kids that might have perfect attendance, but they're not doing the work in school. Then that's money wasted. So I'm kind of in between with this. Y'all let me know what y'all think because that's a lot of money, millions being spent on these kids that can go in other areas of the school as far as sports, after school programs, things like that that's getting used for kids to go to school.
