I'm here to support Dr. El-Sayed because on this subject I know he will be a champion. And I have a right to say that. I've been a United States Senator on this issue. I have walked the halls of the United States Congress attempting to, and with good success, especially with the partnership of many of my colleagues, of highlighting this issue, bringing it to the awareness and consciousness of people who otherwise aren't thinking about it but have a very significant role to play in actually helping the women of America on such a critical issue. As one of the most, some would say the most financially strong economies in the world, we have the distinction of also having one of the highest rates of maternal mortality in the world So it raises the issue of disparities and also hypocrisy when there are leaders who otherwise walk around every day talking about their family values. Here are the facts that highlight the stakes in this election and the need to have a United States senator from the state of Michigan walking those halls, understanding the issue, and having the character and personality to be a fighter for the people who deserve to be seen, recognized, and treated with dignity. So, first, one in 12 women in America lives in a maternal care desert. Black women are three to four times more likely to die in connection with childbirth. Native women, two to three times more likely to die. Medicaid is the largest funder for maternity care in America. Donald Trump cut Medicaid funding by a trillion dollars. These are the facts. Mike Rogers supported that cut through that big bad bill. That's right.
