The debate over a mandatory national voter ID rule keeps running into one comparison. Most states already ask for identification at polling places, and the argument goes that if you need ID for a flight or a six-pack of beer, then electing leaders should demand no less. Because in the Republican Party, we believe, and frankly, most in the Democratic Party believe, that if you've got to show an ID to get on an airplane or show an ID to buy a six-pack of beer, you've got to show an ID to do the most important thing we do as citizens, which is to elect our leaders.
