Converse put out an apology after the backlash on American social media, and honestly the whole thing started from a joke reading. The campaign dropped in late August, with Karina of aespa standing under starlight in a white skirt and black Chuck 70s in hand. Some observers looked at that shot and called it racist, arguing a triangle of light across the fabric read like a Ku Klux Klan hood, and that sneakers dangling beside her legs suggested a hanged body. That's the interpretation being treated as serious here. Converse, under Nike, admitted fault anyway: 'We understand why this shot cuts so deeply. We were wrong.' A brand folding over a visual pun is the part worth staring at.
