    Next week's AI summit is where Bernie Sanders wants Trump and Xi Jinping to sign off on a US-China treaty. His ask: halt work on advanced AI, and ban superintelligence outright. His reasoning is that an uncontrolled superintelligent system wouldn't respect any single country's borders. In his words: "It will not simply be an American problem. It will not be a Chinese problem. It will be humanity's problem." Which puts the bar for this thing about as high as it gets. As Lynn writes, getting Washington and Beijing to agree on AI might be almost as ambitious as building superintelligence itself.

    And let us be very clear, a super intelligent AI that escapes human control will not simply be an American problem, it will not be a Chinese problem, it will be humanity's problem. And that is why I hope very much that at their AI summit next week, President Trump will negotiate a comprehensive treaty with President Xi to establish a pause on advanced AI development and a ban on superintelligence.
