Rep. Mike Johnson on CNN

por Not A Charm: Mike Johnson

CNN's Jake Tapper argues inflation rose due to the war in Iran and tariffs, asking why Americans shouldn't hold Trump and Republicans accountable for the economy. Speaker Johnson rejects the label 'Trump's war in Iran,' identifying Iran as the largest state sponsor of terrorism while claiming they were weeks away from a nuclear bomb. International nuclear watchdogs and intelligence experts have denied Iran was weeks away from a finished nuclear weapon. The post suggests Speaker Johnson corrected the attribution ahead of the midterms. The post cites JFK regarding victory having many fathers and defeat being an orphan. #MikeJohnson

When President Trump took over, it is true that inflation had that 40-year high under Biden-Harris, but when President Trump took over, inflation was 3%. Now it's 3.4%. And one of the reasons, as you noted, is the war in Iran for higher prices. Another reason are the president's tariffs. So why should the American people not hold President Trump and the Republican Congress accountable for this economy, given the fact that the two biggest drivers of inflation right now have nothing to do with Biden, And then it has to do with Trump tariffs that Congress supports and Trump's war in Iran that Congress supports, Republicans in Congress. Well, look, I take issue with everything you just said. It's not Trump's war in Iran. Iran is the largest state sponsor of terrorism, and they were within weeks of having a nuclear capability, a nuclear bomb. That had been an objective, preventing that, from every administration for 50 years. They came this close, and the president had to act. He did not have a choice in the matter to keep Americans safe. Now, that's done. Operation Epic Fury was an epic success. But now we've got to resolve that, of course, because the Strait of Hormuz is not stabilized for commerce. And that's what making gas prices too high. And by extension, groceries because of the fuel cost and transportation costs. All that will come to a close, we believe, soon. You heard the president's soundbite at the opening of the show. He thinks right after the election in a short time frame we can get that done. Why? Because we're going to have the assistance, I believe, of allied nations and NATO partners and Arab states in the region who have a bigger stake in the Strait of Hormuz being open for commerce even than we do. I think everybody assists to make sure that happens. And at the same time, we make sure that Iran can never have a nuclear weapon. That would be a danger to every single American. That's what the president has been pursuing. I think Vice President Vance might have a different view of the war, but that's between you two to chat it out.
