The iPhone 17 Pro variable aperture camera is the headline, but the real story is that Apple isn't actually the first to pull this off. Samsung released a dual aperture smartphone way back when the Galaxy S9 launched. Dual aperture differs from variable aperture in technical depth, yet both share the same core premise of adjusting light intake. Smaller apertures improve photography in bright light conditions by controlling exposure, while larger apertures improve photography in low-light conditions by letting more light hit the sensor. For some odd reason, Samsung decided to skip on this feature entirely after the launch of galaxy S10 and every Galaxy smartphone released after it had a fixed aperture instead. Chances are that Samsung will follow Apple again and re-introduce this feature with their next Galaxy smartphones, though I always found it quite odd that they got rid of it on the first place. The comparison highlights Apple following Samsung's earlier innovation rather than leading it.
