Jake Gyllenhaal says he witnessed a real-life murder during his very first LAPD ride-along while preparing for End of Watch (2012). Gyllenhaal and Michael Peña spent five months completing intense 12-hour ride-alongs with LAPD officers to prepare for their roles as police officers. “The first ride I went on I saw someone murdered. It changes your life. You don't come back from something like that.” Gyllenhaal says the experience was a “rude awakening” and completely changed the way he viewed the world. “I witnessed a murder on my first ride-along. It was definitely a rude awakening to see this happen right before my eyes.” According to The Guardian, Gyllenhaal was sitting incognito in the back of an LAPD patrol car during a midnight shift in South Los Angeles when officers responded to a gang-related shooting. The patrol car was the second squad to arrive. As Gyllenhaal opened the passenger door to step out, a shootout erupted and a man was shot dead in front of him. Despite the shocking experience, Gyllenhaal continued the remaining five months of 12-hour patrol shifts. “This movie changed my life. I mean, the experience of it... every step along the way I learned something about myself. And I saw the world in a different way.”
