Cynthia Erivo Ariana Grande Wicked friendship

The public scrutiny Cynthia Erivo faced alongside Ariana Grande during the Wicked press tour went far beyond simple curiosity about their bond. She described a genuine annoyance that society felt compelled to question why two women could simply be friends, as if their connection required an explanation or implied something was wrong with them. There was a pervasive confusion regarding how they were connected, followed by intense observation of every emotional display, including moments where they cried or laughed. Erivo highlighted the impossible nature of this situation, characterizing it as a double-edged sword because if they had appeared dead behind the eyes and shown no emotion whatsoever, the criticism would have shifted entirely to attack them for being cold or unfeeling. Both extremes, showing nothing and showing too much, invited negative commentary from people who felt entitled to judge the appropriate level of feeling between two women. The lack of clear boundaries left them navigating these conflicting expectations without any support. Erivo expressed a wish that someone could have provided actual guidance on finding the proper balance of emotional expression. She wanted a specific instruction telling them exactly what amount of emotion to show, specifying what not to do, what to avoid, and what constitutes the correct middle ground. Instead, they were left to figure out the rules while facing judgment regardless of their choices.
