Gene Eyster and Matthew Hegedus-Stewart reunion

What gets me is the phone call landing out of nowhere in March 2024. Gene Eyster had spent years carrying a question he couldn't answer: whatever happened to the infant he'd found in South Bend, Indiana, just days ahead of Christmas in 2000, tucked into a box in a hallway of an apartment building. Eyster was the officer who responded that night, and once the newborn was brought to the hospital, he went out and picked up a teddy bear, wanting anyone who stopped at the crib to see that this kid had somebody in his corner. Adoption carried the boy off in another direction, and the wondering about him never fully let go of Eyster. Then came the call. Matthew Hegedus-Stewart, 23, on the other end, a police officer himself in the very department where Eyster had put in his years. It was a fellow officer who put the pieces together, pulling up an old police report and spotting the thread linking the two men. The reunion arrived at a tender moment, with Eyster having recently lost his only son, Nicholas. That's exactly what made it special, honestly. Nothing staged about it, just a quiet line running under everything, locked in tight
