The thing that gets me is how many of these stories had to wait so long to be told at all. A Jihad for Love came out in 2007 and Parvez Sharma points the camera at LGBTQ+ Muslims working out how to hold their faith and their sexuality in the same life, not as separate compartments. Men and women, each with something heavy on their plate. Some are bracing for their own families to shut the door on them. Others are weighed down by what their communities demand. And plenty are still in the middle of sorting out where their sexuality fits next to their beliefs, which is not a small puzzle to sit with. What they're after isn't only a nod from the wider world. It's acceptance from the religious communities that raised them too, the ones that shaped who they are. Nobody wants to spend their life hiding part of themselves to get there. The film sits right in that bind, being honest about who you are on one side and clinging to a belief that runs deep on the other, and it doesn't pretend there's an easy answer 🍿 Stories from LGBTQ+ Muslims barely get heard, so giving them a real platform matters. Behind every argument about faith and sexuality, there's a person with actual feelings, actual fears, actual hopes. Under it all is the hunt for love, for understanding, for somewhere to belong 🏳️🌈
