Weekend Actuals much higher at US BoxOffice for LaikaStudios first original animation in 7 years, PG-13 artsy animation Wildwood! Distributed by Fathom, grossed 12.3M on 3-day Opening weekend, doubling previous instalment MissingLink’s 5.9M debut thanks to extremely positive WOM. Breakdown: 1M THU Previews 3.4M PURE FRI (4.4M FRI Op Day including previews) 4.2M SAT up +23.5% from PURE FRI (-4.5% drop from FRI+Previews) 3.7M SUN -11.9% drop from SAT Even so, it’s still the #2 lowest debut in the studio’s history, below KuboAndTheTwoStrings’ 12.6M, ParaNorman’s 14.1M, Coraline’s 16.8M, TheBoxTrolls’s 17.3M, all distributed by Focus back in the day. The hope is that strong WOM & awards season keep the original animation alive both in the U.S. & overseas to, along with revenue generated from international distribution rights’ sales. recoup at least part of its pricey 100M production price tag not including marketing.
