    Blue Grotto Capri, Italy

Nothing in the Blue Grotto (Grotta Azzurra) lights itself, and that's the detail I keep circling back to. Tucked under the rocky coastline of Capri, Italy, this sea cave holds water that reads as an intense electric blue, bright enough to feel like a rendering glitch. Sunlight runs the whole show. Most of it slips in through an underwater opening below the cave's narrow mouth, and seawater does the filtering: longer wavelengths like red get absorbed much more strongly, while blue pushes farther through the water and floods the cavern. Brilliant blue tones spread across the surface, and the limestone walls around it bounce a glow back at you. Then there's the scale. The cave reaches roughly 60 meters (197 feet) into the rock, yet the entrance sits so low that visitors usually recline in small rowboats to get through safely. Inside, the darkness does its part, making the blue read as something closer to a special effect. Except no artificial lights and no effects rigged up anywhere. Sunlight, seawater and the physics of light are the entire production, which is a pretty good Arc for a cave. Worth saying plainly: the visuals are artistic recreations, made in the spirit of the actual Blue Grotto on Capri, Italy. So, knowing the entrance is barely above the water, would you recline and go in? #NatureScenery
