Seven in the morning to eleven at night, that was the shift David Luiz remembers his mother and father putting in. Home was a rented place on the small side in Diadema, which sits in the São Paulo metro area, and that setup is basically why he was handling his own laundry from age seven onward. He has the method down too: whites need a soak before they hit the machine, and the fabric softener should stay modest. His mother would tell you he never listened on that last part, because he kept going heavy on it so his sweaty match shirts would come out smelling decent. What he frames as the real privilege is separate from all that. A father, a mother and a sister, all there, keeping him safe, giving him affection and steering him toward the best paths in life. "I am the fruit of that," he says. Childhood and adolescence gave him little, and his work is what turned that into everything, plus the chance to know other countries, cultures and people. The laundry is just where the story starts.
