Del Piero stays loyal to Juventus

Sir Alex Ferguson looked at the situation and figured Alessandro Del Piero was done at Juventus. The 2006 World Cup had just passed, the club had been sent down to Serie B, and Ferguson assumed the captain would want out. Manchester United and Real Madrid were both circling, after all. But Del Piero's reply to Ferguson's interest did not go the way the old manager expected. He made it clear he respected the approach, then explained that Juventus was in a very difficult moment and his duty was to remain. He was the team's captain. Did Ferguson really think he would walk away? That answer left Ferguson shocked. Plenty of players in his position would have started hunting for an exit. Del Piero did the opposite. He stayed and helped Juventus work their way back to the elite. Loyalty above all, and not even Sir Alex Ferguson could convince him otherwise.
