Mount Kaputar pink slug

Something bubblegum-pink can stretch to 20 centimeters long and still be a slug. That's the reality for Triboniophorus aff. graeffei, which lives in the misty forest up on Mount Kaputar in Australia. Its body is so vivid that the wet ground and mossy stone around it almost look dull by comparison. Cool, wet weather is when these animals tend to come out, so damp conditions are basically their cue. Food-wise, fungi covers the whole menu. The rarer part is the address. This population exists naturally only inside a small mountain habitat in New South Wales, which puts it among the country's more unusual local wildlife. No feathers, fur, or wings required for nature to build something extraordinary 🌿
