All of Us Strangers Andrew Scott Paul Mescal

The grief hits before the romance does, and that's what got me about All of Us Strangers. Andrew Haigh directed this 2023 British romantic fantasy drama, and Andrew Scott is Adam, a screenwriter whose isolation you can feel in every scene. Paul Mescal plays Harry, the mysterious neighbor, and once Adam starts a relationship with him the chemistry reads intimate and natural, nothing performed. Awkward first meetings give way to gentle talks, held glances, small teasing beats, easy closeness, and it plays like two lonely people finally letting their guard down around each other. The performances from both are beautiful and vulnerable, so a tiny gesture carries the weight of a whole speech. That warmth sitting inside all the surrounding loneliness is why the comfort and the heartbreak arrive together. Then the story opens up: Adam keeps meeting his parents, who are dead, in encounters the film never explains, and through that it gets into grief, old childhood wounds, feeling cut off, and how badly someone needs to be loved and understood. So the romance between the two men is lovely, but it's not the whole thing. It's about loss, about the love you long for, and about the moments you'd give anything to hold onto. The Guardian called it a haunting and beautiful love story, IndieWire went with heartbreaking, intimate and extraordinary, and both nailed it. Some people are meant to find each other, and this one stays with you once the credits finish.
