🇷🇺 RUSSIA HAS SPACE GUNS: The Soviet Union developed and actually tested a cannon on military space stations, and it also pursued anti-satellite (ASAT) systems and other space weapons concepts. Almaz Military Space Station, the “space gun” The manned military reconnaissance stations flown under the cover names Salyut 2, 3, and 5 in the 1970s carried a rapid-fire cannon (the Rikhter R-23 / R-23M “Kartech,” derived from the tail gun of the Tu-22 bomber). It was a self-defense weapon intended to protect the station from potential American spacecraft that might inspect or attack it. The gun was fixed-mounted, so the entire station had to be rotated to aim it. -> It was test-fired in orbit on 24 January 1975 from Salyut 3 (Almaz OPS-2), after the crew had left. Soviet engineers fired it remotely (roughly 20 rounds in short bursts) while using thrusters to counteract the recoil. -> This is the only known case of a cannon actually being fired from a spacecraft in orbit.
