A sign at the entrance of a school in Bend, Oregon, does not stop bullets. At Silver Rail Elementary, someone walked in armed, and a father took him down almost right after the first shots rang out. Officials say the suspect is dead. Kids were hurt. Police got there within minutes, which is genuinely fast, but the opening rounds were already fired before any cruiser pulled up. So the policy calls the campus a "gun-free zone," and what that actually does is strip every parent, teacher, and staffer who follows the law of any way to fight back, while the guy who never cared about rules strolls in carrying. Protection of children falls to the people in the building and the neighborhood around it, not to a district office, not to a metal plaque bolted by the door, not to anyone whose own kids go somewhere else.
