    Once Upon a Time in the West 1968

    The Good, the Bad and the Ugly gets all the pop culture love, but Once Upon a Time in the West is Sergio Leone's real magnum opus. Slower, darker, more brutal, and casting America's sweetheart Henry Fonda as a cold-blooded child killer remains a top three villain twist in film history. What you're actually watching for most of the runtime: two hours of men violently sweating into their trench coats, 45 minutes of extreme eye close-ups, and 15 minutes of actual plot. My rating started at 4/5 stars, but it's a 10/10 masterpiece. Don't ask me how it works, it just does. Modern cinema has zero patience. The opening train station sequence lasts nearly 10 minutes with barely a word spoken, just a fly, a squeaking windmill, and pure tension. Today's studio execs would cut it after 12 seconds and add a Marvel quip. Leone made silence flex. Ennio Morricone composed the entire soundtrack before they shot a single frame. Leone literally played the score on set so actors could step to the rhythm. The harmonica theme alone carries more narrative weight than most modern movie scripts. ⭐Synopsis: A mystery man with a harmonica, a rogue outlaw, and a grieving widow walk into a dusty boomtown to stop a ruthless railroad tycoon and his ice-cold hitman. Released in 1968, this is less of a Western and more of an operatic funeral for the entire wild frontier.
