Whale shark largest living fish

The whale shark stands as the largest living fish species, yet its massive frame belies a diet of tiny plankton and small organisms rather than any hunt for large prey. These peaceful filter feeders are often described as gentle giants because they simply swim through the water to consume what is there. In exceptional cases, this creature can reach lengths of approximately 18 meters or 59 feet. The ocean's largest fish maintains a surprisingly calm existence while filtering nutrients from the sea.
