    The Perfect Storm 2000 review

The boat was never found. That's the part Hollywood skips when it slaps "based on a true story" on something, and it's why The Perfect Storm (2000) keeps rattling around in my head at 3.5/5 stars. The Andrea Gail had no chance. Not a slim one, not a fighting one. None. Six fishermen walked straight into a storm that was already drawn on the map, chasing a paycheck, and the water did exactly what water does. The final wave in this movie is the most honest special effect of the 2000s for that reason. It isn't a beast. It's just the ocean closing a tab. Clooney's captain has the energy of a group chat that will not let you go to bed. One more set, one more run, one more haul, and the market price of fish keeps beating the idea of going home. Mark Wahlberg's character dies chasing swordfish and honestly he deserved a better script than that. What gets me is that this isn't a tragedy. It plays like a workplace safety video where every warning gets ignored. A woman tells them. A weather report tells them. Even God, presumably, tells them. Two hours of men not listening, and the ocean wins. The fish win. Everyone holding a paycheck and a stubborn jaw loses. The credits roll over names of people who stayed at sea. If that reads like a spoiler, you weren't paying attention to the title.
