Critics kept pegging Robert Pattinson as Edward Cullen even after the Twilight series wrapped, but David Cronenberg saw past that when casting him as Eric Packer in Cosmopolis. Cronenberg called him underrated and brushed off the Twilight association, yet Pattinson almost declined the role in 2012. While critics were split on the film itself, they unanimously praised his performance. That work stood as clear proof he could lead a Cronenberg film and kicked off the subsequent career run that followed.
