Insidious 2010 James Wan review

Insidious (2010) actually ruined modern horror, but not for the reason you think. Before this, jump scares had to be earned through suspense. James Wan realized he could just slam a piano key, flash a red face, and make $100M. It set a precedent where atmosphere took a backseat to theatrical jumps, birthing a decade of cheap shock-tactics. That demon looks like Darth Maul's theater-kid cousin, but the score forced every theater seat to vibrate. Terrifying? Yes. But it turned horror into a haunted house jump-routine rather than slow-burn dread. Lin Shaye as Elise Rainier is the reason this movie still works. She walks into a room of skeptics, says "it's not the house that's haunted, it's your son," and the entire tone flips from jump-scare compilation to actual myth. No CGI flex. No monologue about ancient curses. Just a tired woman who has seen The Further and is done explaining it nicely. That's star power. Synopsis: Boy sleepwalks into hell. Parents hire a psychic. Psychic says the house is fine, your son is the portal, dad used to do the same thing, also there's a red demon with hooves who likes show tunes. They go into the fog to get him. They come back with extra passengers. Credits. That's the whole plot and it still slaps harder than most $100M hauntings.
