Joker 2019 Arthur Fleck staircase scene

What stays with me is that scene where Arthur Fleck sits with newspaper clippings, practicing a laugh that should come naturally. That is the most unsettling moment in Joker (2019), more than any subway confrontation, because it shows how close feeling invisible sits to wanting to tear everything down. I would rate the film 4.5/5. What it gets right, maybe better than anything else in modern cinema, is how mental healthcare fails people in quiet, bureaucratic ways. Arthur did not need an origin story. He needed a caseworker whose funding had not been gutted. Systemic austerity is the real antagonist here, and the film never lets you look away from that. But the public conversation went sideways. Everyone was busy asking whether the movie was "dangerous" instead of engaging with what it was actually saying. That debate poisoned film discourse for three years. And half the internet turned Arthur into their avatar while completely missing that the movie is explicitly telling you not to root for him. Then there is the Phoenix versus Ledger question, which I genuinely cannot settle. What Phoenix did was not a Joker performance so much as a man eroded by his city until only laughter was left. Everything after it has been imitation. The same critics who called it "glorified violence" will binge a prestige serial-killer show and call it art. They do not hate this movie. They hate that it refused to let them feel superior. A failed clown with a laugh he cannot control, trying to be kind in a city that treats kindness as an insult. Wayne Hall, Murray Franklin, all of it. Gotham starves him, humiliates him, then acts shocked when the smile becomes a weapon. Arthur Fleck does not become the Joker. The city finishes the job and calls it entertainment.
