    When Same-Sex Marriage Became Legal Around The World

    The Netherlands was first, back in 2001. Belgium followed in 2003, then Canada and Spain both got there in 2005, with South Africa next in 2006. Norway and Sweden arrived together in 2009, and 2010 brought Argentina, Iceland, and Portugal into the fold. Denmark came in 2012. Then 2013 was a big one: Brazil, France, New Zealand, and Uruguay all legalized it that year. The United Kingdom joined in 2014, and 2015 saw Ireland, Luxembourg, and the United States all pass their laws. Colombia was next in 2016. From there, the list kept growing. Australia, Finland, Germany, and Malta all made it official in 2017. Austria, Ecuador, and Taiwan followed in 2019. Costa Rica came in 2020, then Chile and Cuba in 2022. And the timeline runs all the way to 2026, with Nepal's court-ordered recognition. The whole thing covers 39 countries, sourced from Equaldex, Pew Research Center, and Our World in Data.
