Sweden tax history and the racketeer state

A Swedish peasant in the 14th century handed over roughly 2% of his farm's worth to the crown during peaceful stretches. Then the Mecklenburg "liberators" showed up and the number jumped to about 15%. Pitchforks came out, the king went down, and the exactions dropped back. Now look at Sweden. The state absorbs around 41% of everything the country makes. On a high salary, the last krona goes at under 52%. Stack payroll levies, income tax and consumption tax together and the typical worker surrenders over half the value of what they do. The officials and bureaucrats running this are racketeers. They take from their own people and slap social justice on the label. Sword robbery was called war. Payslip and declaration robbery gets called care. The medieval baron had one thing going for him: he never pretended the theft was kindness.
