Ryan Gosling The Lovely Bones casting

Jack Salmon in The Lovely Bones went to Mark Wahlberg, but the part was Ryan Gosling's first. He'd been cast for the 2009 film, and he didn't half-step: weight gained, beard grown, all of it aimed at playing a grieving father. Then, with only a pair of days left before cameras rolled, Wahlberg took over. Gosling's own read on the switch was that both sides agreed on it, and he'd apparently always felt too young for the father role anyway. Around the same time, word was that he and director Peter Jackson weren't seeing eye to eye creatively. So the guy who bulked up and grew the beard never made it to set. That's the part of the story people forget 🍿
