Marcus Smart career timeline

The Marcus Smart chapter that just wrapped is a whole case study in what a role player is actually worth. Back when Memphis acquired him, the plan was for him to push that roster past the playoff floor and into real contention. Injuries killed it. Twenty games, that's all he got. Then came the 2025 deadline deal to Washington, with Johnny Davis and Marvin Bagley III headed the other way to the Grizzlies. Neither of those two lasted past the offseason in Memphis. In D.C., Smart's game looked a step slower. At 30 he was logging the fewest minutes of his career, and the Wizards eventually waived him. That's the split screen with a guy like this. Put him on a rebuilding roster and he's the 10th or 12th man. Put him on a playoff team and he's the motor everyone else feeds off. Last offseason the Lakers gave him two years and $11 million. The numbers never sniffed Sixth Man of the Year territory. Didn't matter. He backed up at the point, hit the floor for loose balls, made the plays that swing games, and led by example the way good vets do. Now he's in Houston, playing for the coach who once handed him DPOY. Not many guys build a whole career on the small stuff. Smart did.
