It's a common myth that hits just fall into place, but the reality for Blondie is that they had to work through years of trial and error before "Heart of Glass" finally found its footing. Debbie Harry and Chris Stein started digging into the track back in the mid-1970s with an early cut called "Once I Had a Love" that barely resembled the final version anyone knows today. The band kept circling back to the composition again and again, testing out different rhythms and arrangement choices until something clicked.
