UNESCO's 20th General Conference is where it got decided, on 27 November 1978, that 1981 would carry the name Year of Ataturk. The resolution's own justification is what did the talking: Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, an outstanding personality, someone who put in the work for peace, cooperation and international understanding. What gets singled out is the early stuff. Him standing among the leaders of the first fights against colonialism and imperialism. Him pushing peoples toward understanding each other, toward a peace that holds. Him arguing for harmony and cooperation with no line drawn on colour, religion or race. So hey racist PdxInteractive?
