The Silver River — Thousands of Barracuda Forming Perfect Spiral Vortex From Above

A school of barracuda forms a tornado shape as a defensive behavior — the spiral confuses predators with constantly changing silver light reflections that make it impossible to focus on any individual fish. The behavior requires no leader and no communication beyond each fish maintaining its position relative to its immediate neighbors. The result is a perfect mathematical spiral emerging spontaneously from thousands of individual simple decisions. The same spiral shape appears in galaxies in hurricanes in nautilus shells in DNA. The universe has one favorite shape and it uses it everywhere from the scale of atoms to the scale of galaxies.
