Emiliano Martínez couldn’t figure out why a teammate said “Hi, Em” when he walked into the Arsenal dressing room. His English was so rough he thought only “hola” worked as a greeting. Arsène Wenger stepped in and made him learn the language, adding a £20,000 bonus to his contract if he passed a university exam. Martínez begged the professor to let him through, studied hard, passed it, and kept getting better with English over the years.
