Hernan Crespo walked away from the Argentina setup and the reason traces straight back to Marcelo Bielsa. They had a match in Brazil, Saviola and Tevez were just breaking through, and Crespo was already an established name. Bielsa came to him and said go play right winger. He did it, they lost 3-1. Then came Peru and Bielsa shoved him out on the left because Carlitos was through the middle. It finished 0-0, a dreadful game, and Crespo was fuming. Afterward Bielsa sat him down and hit him with “Now you’re a mature guy.” Crespo says that was pure disrespect. Bielsa looked down and walked off, no apology or explanation the next day either. Crespo made his mind up in the shower: he wasn’t coming back while Bielsa was in charge. He told him straight, everything you’ve been doing to me is so serious, all these disrespects, that I’m setting aside the greatest thing in my life, playing for the National Team. I’m never coming back as long as you’re here.
