@FootynewsThe entire drama of Maxi Rodriguez's move to Liverpool hinged on a Christmas trip to Argentina that got interrupted by an urgent call from his agent. He was told Rafa Benitez was on the line and he had exactly 48 hours to decide if he wanted to join the club. When the conversation happened, Benitez asked straight up if he knew English. Rodriguez confidently lied, telling him he learned it in school back home and there was nothing to worry about. The transfer deal could have collapsed for any other reason imaginable, but language skills definitely weren't going to be the cause. Fast forward to the first press conference where Benitez announced he would speak first before handing over the mic. Rodriguez seized the moment to interrupt and admit the truth: he didn't actually know a damn thing despite what he claimed earlier. Benitez reacted with genuine surprise, letting out a 'Hostia man,' but accepted the situation immediately. He told Rodriguez that everything was fine, no problem at all, but made it clear that tomorrow he starts studying.
