    L.A. Confidential 1997 noir analysis

@genesisLet's talk about why L.A. Confidential from 1997 is the only noir that actually respects your brain. It manages to juggle five separate plot threads without needing a superhero landing or an exposition monologue to hold your hand. The movie drops you into 1953 where the LAPD is running a shiny image campaign while heroin, lookalike prostitutes, and a massacre are happening under the hood. You've got Jack Vincennes played by Spacey representing the selling out phase of systemic corruption, Bud White with Crowe handling the beating down stage, and Ed Exley portrayed by Pearce who plays the system itself. Each guy has a specific drive: Exley wants that gold star for recognition, White wants to harm specific people, and Vincennes just craves publicity. They all manage to hit their immediate goals but none of them can keep what they won. Modern cinema decided to swap script economy for CGI set pieces and extended setups designed to launch sequels instead. The author insists this was the best picture of 1997 that didn't feature a boat. Honestly it stands as the last time Hollywood trusted an audience to track everything moving at once.

Three men in suits stand in the rain on a Hollywood street at night. They appear to be detectives, with LAPD badges visible on their jackets. Behind them, a marquee reads "HUSH-HUSH THE MAGAZINE OF SCANDAL" and a diner sign says "NITE OWL COFFEE OPEN 24 HOURS." A woman in a vintage dress stands in the background. The mood is noir and dramatic.
