That's the whole engine of Annabelle (2014), and honestly it's enough. 99 minutes of a story that never bothers connecting itself to the rest of the franchise, because it doesn't have to. The object is in the house now. That's the horror. The Conjuring taught people to be afraid of the dark. This one taught them to be afraid of buying antiques. Different fear, same universe. It pulled $257 million anyway, which tells you something about what audiences will pay for. What the movie actually does well is pace. Tighter and more aggressive than a lot of people remember it being. Most of the runtime is quiet, then loud, then a porcelain face filling the frame, and the demon's whole agenda amounts to occupying the space. No grand plan. Just a roommate who won't leave. The opening sequence does more with discomfort than most horror films manage across a full act, and it sets up the one rule the couple immediately breaks. If you went in wanting more of the Warrens, you left unhappy. That's fair. The movie wasn't built for you. It was built to make your own living room feel wrong, and the doll didn't need a feature-length film to pull that off. 2014 took a minor prop from another movie and handed it a personality: a disappointed Victorian aunt who hates your wallpaper. Three sequels followed. Calling that a possession event is not a stretch. Say what you want about the film itself. The doll is more recognizable than plenty of working actors now. Merch, theme park attractions, a whole intellectual property, all from one face behind glass. Respect the hustle. Couple buys a doll. Doll is not vintage.
