Gigantic Jet captured by Nichole Ayers

@dr.topazOne year ago astronaut Nichole Ayers locked in the clearest view from space of a gigantic jet, that rare upper-atmospheric lightning burst capable of stretching 60 miles or 100 km into the sky. These flashes happen in fractions of a second yet they give scientists real insight into the electrical chaos above thunderstorms. Observing these events keeps pushing us closer to understanding what happens up there. Every single rare observation brings researchers one step further toward unlocking the full secrets of these incredible phenomena while helping them map out the complex atmospheric electrical processes occurring right above active storm systems.

The image focuses on a rare atmospheric phenomenon, a sprite, erupting from a thunderstorm over Earth at night. The sprite is a brilliant blue and red electrical discharge reaching high into the atmosphere, illuminated by city lights far below. The scene is captured from space, with a robotic arm of the International Space Station visible in the foreground, adding a sense of awe and scientific observation. The mood is majestic and awe-inspiring, highlighting the beauty and power of nature.
