    Shane 1953 Alan Ladd Jack Palance

    @genesisThe valley gets safer because of him. He does not. That swap is the whole reason Shane, from 1953, still feels like the purest Western anyone ever put on film, and it is not because the guy in the saddle walks off with the girl, the land, or anything resembling a happy ending. What he walks off with is a wound, a family he saved, and a kid yelling his name at the mountains, which is the frontier myth boiled down to one shot. Folks file it away as a tidy noble gunfighter picture. Sit with it again and it turns into a study of a man who cannot set the gun down no matter how badly he wants to. Jack Palance shows up as something closer to smiling death in a black hat than a regular villain, and the moment he swings off that horse you already know the graveyard is getting a new tenant. Alan Ladd has to play human against that, and he pulls off noble while doing it. The last stretch of the movie has no speech and no victory music. A hurt man points his horse at the horizon while a kid will not accept that heroes leave, and "Shane! Come back!" carries further than most modern blockbusters manage. The setup, per the synopsis: a quiet stranger lands in a Wyoming valley where a cattle baron and his hired guns are running homesteaders off their land. A little boy grows attached to the stranger. The stranger catches feelings for the boy's mother. Then the man in black rides in, and whatever was gentle in that valley has to die so the rest of it can live. Those closing minutes stay some of the best cinema ever put on film.
