@professional_portalChristopher Nolan's The Odyssey opened in China shortly before a $200 budget film named Niu Lai, also known as Here Comes the Cow, began its strange journey. This project was built almost entirely by mother-and-son duo Xin Yumeng and Sun Lifang, who dedicated five years to writing, voice acting, and handling crew duties themselves. The initial reception was brutal; critics described the final product as stiff, ugly, and confusing while some viewers actually requested the removal of the film from theaters. Box office earnings during the first ten days were approximately $1,250, with daily revenue dropping to as low as $35 at times. Traction arrived only after users started sharing clips specifically to mock the visual quality. Public sentiment eventually shifted toward defending the film's aesthetic as a reaction against polished AI-generated animation. Following this trend shift, box office revenue increased to $4.3 million. The film became the most profitable movie ever recorded in this context, surpassing Obsession (2026) in profitability metrics. It ranked within the top 10 highest-grossing animated films in China for the current year. A production costing just $200 created by two people ended up competing directly with Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey.
